BMX jump in Mono

Pity I'd forgotten my flash gun - would have underexposed the background. Ended up over exposing to give some detail in the subject and then converting to mono using Silver Efex.

Cypriot Wine Maker

This gentleman is the husband of the lady in yesterday's post. He makes delicious sherry-like wine.

Old Friends

A candid take on a park bench in Islington. Used the Canon 50mm f/1.2L wide open on a 5D Mark II. Despite some of the reports on the web I'm impressed with the wide-open quality of the 50mm.

The workroom

Sorry for gap in posting - been in Norfolk and France over the last couple of weeks - lots of photos to post over the coming days.

This is a B&W conversion of an HDR. Camera on tripod, 3 exposures - relatively long as the only light was from a small window.

Sarah and Andy

Had a fun shoot with Sarah and Andy last night - lots of interesting shots to come when I get back to my desktop, but here's a little taster....

Sort-of self portrait

Camera set by me, but shot taken by my friend Helen!

Used the 135L wide open @ f/2 with a dash of flash to give highlights in the eyes and lower facial shadows given the strength of the sun.

Helen did well to nail the focus, but if I'm going to be critical I'd rather not have had my foot amputated!

Accordian Candid

I snapped this using the Manual Focus Zeiss using focus confirm to check the subject was correctly in focus. Manual conversion to B&W in Lightroom adjusting blacks, contrast, clarity and adding a subtle toning to the shadows.

Souq B&W candid

You could argue that the subject looking out of the frame draws the viewers eye from the shot, but I quite like it anyway!

The blacksmith

A blacksmith with 40 years experience. Recently got a new workshop at the canalside.

Photo taken using the manual focus Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar, with flash bounced off the wall on the left hand side to avoid that 'direct flash' look. I had the bounce card on the 580EXII up to give highlights in the eyes. I also include a crop - the Zeiss is unbelievably sharp! (Click the photo to see the cropped area larger).

Implied nude

I carefully composed and edited this shot to give the (false) impression the model was nude.

Lighting was from a flashgun firing into a sheet of paper to soften the light.

Fortuitous Candid!

I was pleased with how this #photo came off. Candid's can be tricky. This is especially the case for this shot as I had my camera at waist level and used a wide aperture / servo focussing. I had the camera down there to get natural looks on people's faces rather than them staring at the camera.

I pointed the camera in the direction of this man engrossed in his phone and only realised the kissing couple in the background when I downloaded the shot to the computer!
