Derwentwater in the 'Golden Hour'
Photographers often aim to take outdoor pictures in the 'Golden Hour' - the hour before sunset. This is because you can get a beautiful warmth to the light and the low position of the sun in the sky often makes for more interesting shadows than when the sun is higher.
This was shot at the shore of the beautiful Derwentwater (or Derwent Water). I took two shots at combined them in Photomatix to retain sky and foreground detail.

Twins with a single model!
This shot took some planning! First the shot, next the explanation!
Helen and I ventured out onto her roof in London at sunset. I placed the Canon 1DsIII and 50mm f/1.2 on a tripod, focussed it and set it to f/2.0. A flash gun was off camera on a stand to the right of the shooting position.
Firstly Helen sat on the right hand side of the roof with a red wig on. Then, while she changed, I took a series of shots of the background to blend into an HDR.
Helen then posed on the left.
I merged three shots to an HDR for the background, blended in the two Helens and finally added some of the original sunset back in to enrich the sky!

Rooftop Helen, thoughtful at sunset
Had a fun shoot with Helen tonight - started off with some shots on the roof at sunset. There was a several storey drop just to the right of the picture!
Helen was lit with an off-camera bare flash to camera right.

x100s Panaroma
I recommend clicking through to see a larger version!
For once, I think a central-ish subject element works in the composition.

Paphos Sunset
Hello all! Back from a lovely week in Cyprus.
This one was taken using the Lee Big Stopper - it's a very dark neutral density filter which allows you to use abnormally long shutter speeds. These can help to show movement in clouds, or in this case, blur the water.

Rays at dusk
Mini review coming later, but this was taken with the Fuji x100s which is a huge advance on the original x100.

Mum and Dad at sunset in Cyprus
I wanted to keep the sunset colours while properly exposing Mum & Dad. To do this I dialled in some negative exposure compensation and used on camera flash to expose my parents.

Cypriot Sunset
Firstly - many many thanks to all of you who visit this blog - I'm delighted that I've just gone over the 20,000 mark on hits!
So - this was the sun falling over a bay near Kourion. Lens is a Canon 70-300L IS which I briefly dabbled with. Nice enough, but not really my thing.

Sunset at the Quay Hotel, Conwy
In Conwy on business. Snapped this one at f/2 on the 85mm f/1.2 L just to prove to Bob that the aperture on my lens is not stuck at 1.2!
Three shots blended in Photomatix on Painterly.
