Horse sculpture, Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur

A three-shot HDR processed in Photomatix. I chose a fairly slender depth of field (f/2.2) to give the shot some depth and 'pop' the foreground.

Ask a stranger to pose....

So I ask a couple to pose for me by the Petronas Towers and then everyone wants a shot!

Very challenging lighting - sometimes needing to back the flash off, other times not!

First day in Kuala Lumpur - Petronas Towers

Hi all

Apologies I've not posted much for a while - I plan to post more over the coming weeks.

Today I arrived in KL and I am staying near the Petronas Towers.

The first shot is the typical one - taken from the hotel 'SkyBar'. With the second I went for a quirkier angle - I was more interested in the geometry than the colour so I converted to black and white in Silver Efex.

Rebecca in Bristol

Long time, no posting - apologies! Spending far too much time playing the guitar!

Anyhow - a shot from a night shoot in Bristol of the model, Rebecca.

Very little light so shot wide open (handheld) on a 50/1.2

Motech Photo Shoot

Sorry it's been a little quiet recently - shot quite a few weddings and may blog about those soon, but I thought you might be interested in a car photoshoot from the weekend for Motech. (http://www.motechperformance.co.uk/)

[Thanks to Mike of Motech and James / Dave for the 'loan' of their cars for the shoot.]

(You can see the full gallery of the shots here: http://www.philhackettphotography.com/motech)

Photographing cars is a challenging business - it's difficult to avoid getting hotspots from the lights; reflections can also ruin the shots.

I decided to use a 5x7 Lastolite HiLite with two Lencarta ElitePro 2's inside. I love the ElitePro 2's as I can control the power remotely - this proved invaluable when tweaking the output in the car shoot.

This was the basic setup:

The black background gave a plain backdrop and removed unwanted reflections from behind the cars.
I angled the soft 'wall' to give some variation in illumination from left to right, although I ended up increasing the power of the flashgun furthest from the car to make the drop-off less severe.

This shows the general effect:

In the first shot above you can see an octobox - I experimented with this as a fill light for some shots, but had it switched off for most.

You can see the reflection of the softbox here - note the more even lighting across the car:

For straight engine shots I used a softbox on its own:

When I wanted the front and engine I used the soft 'wall' to light the front of the car and a 70cm beauty dish to pool some light onto the engine bay:

We used a couple of ramps to angle the rear of the car for details of the exhaust system:

Camera / lens combinations - I mostly used a 1DsIII with the 70-200 f/2.8 II. For the engine shots I used a 50mm and I did take a couple of wider angle shots of the front of the M4 using my 16-35 & 24-105 zooms.

Re-edit of Graffiti and Meadow shot

The background was a little too distracting in yesterday's shot - here I've darkened it and lightened Kayleigh slightly:

Here's a different scene from the same shoot - this time taken at a distance with a longer lens - still lit with two off-camera flashguns - one in front of Kayleigh and the other behind - both to camera left.

Kayleigh Graffiti and behind-the-scenes

Had a great shoot with Kayleigh this evening. The theme was urban / graffiti and I lit the shot with two off-camera 580EXII's, both fired with Hahnel Tuff TTL triggers. I used a lastolite Softbox for the key light and bare flash for the hair light.

Long exposure bridge

Wow - almost a month since my last post - many apologies.

I had a crazy week where I photographed three weddings around a holiday and then had four days to process all the shots before heading to France for over a week!

Anyway - I've not got a few shots to share and will start with this one:

I wanted to get a thin depth of field but also blur the water with a long exposure. To achieve this I stacked a Lee 'Big Stopper' with my friend Bob's Lee 6-stop Neutral Density to allow a 30 second exposure at f/2.

Below is a shot of me taking the shot, kindly provided by Bob! You can visit his website here: http://www.boblatham-photography.net/

Andy in thought

Processed in Analog Efex 2 to give a film-like feel. I added a 'light leak' which gives a gentle feeling of haze without killing the contrast.

Trotters Independent Training

I spent three hours today photographing the public with Del Boy's car, Steve McQueen and a couple of other vehicles!

Fighting against strong sunlight is always tricky - I dialled in -1 on most of the shots on ambient exposure and +2/3 on the flash gun.

Twins with a single model!

This shot took some planning! First the shot, next the explanation!

Helen and I ventured out onto her roof in London at sunset. I placed the Canon 1DsIII and 50mm  f/1.2 on a tripod, focussed it and set it to f/2.0. A flash gun was off camera on a stand to the right of the shooting position.

Firstly Helen sat on the right hand side of the roof with a red wig on. Then, while she changed, I took a series of shots of the background to blend into an HDR.

Helen then posed on the left.

I merged three shots to an HDR for the background, blended in the two Helens and finally added some of the original sunset back in to enrich the sky!

Rooftop Helen, thoughtful at sunset

Had a fun shoot with Helen tonight - started off with some shots on the roof at sunset. There was a several storey drop just to the right of the picture!

Helen was lit with an off-camera bare flash to camera right.
